Who I Would Like to MeetIn the 60’s I got caught up in the energies of the streets and it seems that I have never been able to leave them. During this time I found myself thinking a lot like other minority artist of the time. Thinking that for the most part the traditional art funding sources, and the academic art institutions were not supportive and had little relevancy towards culturally and community related art projects. As such we were dependent on our biggest resources: our communities and ourselves.nnWe began formulating organizations that develop innovative approaches towards funding our projects. nnA sample of this is with my own experience as a youth counselor/worker, I began combining my art capabilities into this line of work. By organizing rival gang members to produce murals and making these project serve a multitude of purposes: beautifying the community, eliminating unsightful graffiti, and curtailing gang warfare. The youth saw themselves different from how they saw each other out in the streets, not as enemies but as working partners not much different from each other, working together towards a positive end.nnTo do this we had to plug into your humanitarian type of funding sources, usually not interested in the arts but on the social issues and putting more emphasis on the process rather than the product.nnThese community art organizations that I speak about were to a large degree made up of artist who had determined to reject the goal of “making it” in the museums, galleries and in the private collections. We instead selected a new audience: our own communities. We did this by means of street theatre, poster art, murals, and any other forms of artistic expression.nnPersonally I became inclined towards murals because they are a wonderful form to educate and inspire and a great way to reach thousands upon thousands of peoples, since they are in public spaces accessible to anyone. To me at the time that was truly the epitome of community art.nnI must add at the time that when I refer to community arts I was not referring to Public art. I tend to differentiate the two. Public art in my view could be commissions that normally are given to well establish, well recognizable artist but with no guarantees that they are from the community or usually are not sensitize to the cultural needs of the particular community were the art piece will be executed. Therefore the community gets excluded from the decision making process, while on the other hand community arts is just that: community getting involved whether in the actual execution of the piece or being involved in the conception of the subject matter, Of course the input varies from project to project.nnEventhow its been a long time from the 60”s and some things have change, there is room for collaboration between community arts and the establish art institutions. Both have a lot to gain from each other.nSince Community arts projects exist marginally on a day by day, month by month basis, the results are that more than a few get abandon in midstream or that we have little choice but to dedicate quality time towards fundraising, leaving some projects unfinished or in mediocre conditions. This is projects could utilize the expertise and valuable resources that your well establish art institutions have. On the other hand your community arts projects can help expand different constituencies by opening doors for a wider range of community participation. The collaboration with community artist engaging in large scale artistic expression would elevate the chances for intergrading the visual arts into the lives of many people who have been excluded from this experience.
